The Gift is in the Giving
This year PHUMC will partner with two local organizations to make the holidays brighter for children and families in need. It is one of the many ways we reach out to our neighbors to share the love and grace that God extends to us all.
Madison Countians Allied Against Poverty (MadCAAP) is a nonprofit organization in our community that provides assistance to poor families in Canton. PHUMC will again participate in the MadCAAP Holiday Adopt a Family Program. This year the need is greater than ever and our church has adopted 25 MadCAAP families. These families live at or below the poverty line and either the mother or father of each family has attended a series of educational classes to qualify for the program.
The Methodist Children’s Home (MCH) provides therapeutic residential care for abused and neglected children in Mississippi who are no longer in the care of their parents. MCH offers residential group care (group homes) and individual foster homes throughout the state. MCH is a safe haven and second chance for children who have known little safety and had few chances in life.
You can help in one of two ways:
Angel Tree
Take an angel from the tree in the Worship Center, and return the wrapped gift or gift card by Sunday, December 14th. Gifts should be wrapped and clearly labeled with the child’s name. It is very important that the gift be labeled. Collection bins will be set up in the Worship Center and Education Building.
MCH Angels ask for a specific gift card in the amount of $25. Twenty-five dollars only, please. Gift cards are shared among the children in MCH care and equal amounts make it easier for the staff to be fair in distribution.
MadCAAP Angels give a specific child’s name, age, sizes, and wish list. Please remember that poor children are influenced by the hottest trends in the same way we are and may ask for trendy, expensive items. You are not expected to purchase any suggested item unless you want to do so. Any age appropriate gift is appreciated.
Adopt-a-Family
You may also adopt a family as a whole. If you, your Sunday school class or small group are interested in adopting an entire family, please let us know. In the past, many who have adopted a family chose to deliver the gifts themselves. This is one of the greatest joys of this program. However, if you prefer, you can return your family’s gifts to the church by December 14 and MadCAAP will be happy to arrange delivery for you.
